How to use hymn interludes.
In college I was taught to bang on the piano
for offertories. You know - like Dino - whipping
up and down the keyboard. It was all about
my technique!
In the new worship way of doing
things (it's
not a performance, but about
connecting with
God) that's bad!
If I do a keyboard offertory now, it's simple
and shorter. I want people to be reflective,
not wowed. The hymn interludes are a quick,
easy offertory.
Also, try combining them with the underscores. In my underscore tutorial I suggest coming out of "Open the Eyes
of My Heart," playing an underscore
during a prayer, then going into an intro
to the hymn Holy Holy Holy.
Try playing the hymn interlude
instead of
the underscore (still using the
key change
in the underscore.) Or play both
the underscore
and the Holy Holy Holy hymn interlude,
then
transitioning into the intro
to the congregational
version of Holy Holy Holy.
I've often found that if I play
a thoughtful,
simple version of a hymn or praise
song,
I hear after the service "why
didn't
we get a chance to sing it?"
Hearing
a nice instrumental version of
a song makes
people want to participate.
Optional ending: some hymn interludes have a special twist
optional ending that can throw
the whole
thing into a different key -
use this as
a cool transition into a congregational
hymn
or praise song.
